Description
Weingut Gesellmann Blaufränkisch Creitzer Reserve Mittelburgenland DAC 2023 – an elegant and characterful Austrian red wine.
Weingut Gesellmann is a family-owned winery located in the town of Deutschkreutz, in Austria’s Mittelburgenland region. The family has been growing grapes here since 1719, but it became more widely known in the 1970s under the leadership of Engelbert Gesellmann. Latter one of the pioneers of Austria’s red wine revolution. He was among the first in Austria to experiment with barrique ageing and international grape varieties. Thats how the iconic cuvées “Opus Eximium” and “Bela Rex”, was made, which have become symbols of the region.
Since 1992, the winery has been run by his son Albert Gesellmann, who has placed an even stronger focus on the potential of the indigenous Blaufränkisch grape. Since 2015, the winery has been certified organic, making it the first organically certified winery in Deutschkreutz. Today, 50 hectares of vineyards, around 90% of which are dedicated to red wine production. Those are cultivated with a strong commitment to quality, including fruit from some vines that are up to 90 years old. This wine is made from 100% Blaufränkisch grapes grown on heavy clay soils with limestone layers, which contribute minerality and structure to the wine. It is matured in used oak vessels, preserving the purity and elegance characteristic of Blaufränkisch.
Tasting Notes:
The wine displays a rich, deep ruby colour with purple reflections. The aroma is charming and complex, revealing blackcurrant, ripe black cherries and mulberry, complemented by subtle notes of tobacco and herbs.
On the palate, the wine is dominated by juicy, elegant fruit, clean cherry flavours, finely structured tannins and a refreshing mineral, slightly saline finish. The finish is long and expressive.
Serving:
Weingut Gesellmann Blaufränkisch Creitzer Reserve Mittelburgenland DAC 2023 is suitable for drinking now, but thanks to its structure, it can continue to develop for another 5–8 years.
We recommend serving it at 16–18°C in a large red wine glass.
It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, braised beef cheek, game dishes and aged cheeses.
