Description
Weingut Gesellmann Trockenbeerenauslese 2017 – an exceptionally concentrated, luxurious and age-worthy Austrian dessert wine.
Weingut Gesellmann is a family-owned winery located in the Mittelburgenland region of Austria. The family has been cultivating vines here since 1719. The winery rose to prominence in the 1970s under the leadership of Engelbert Gesellmann, one of the key pioneers of Burgenland’s red wine movement. Today, his son Albert Gesellmann continues the family tradition, placing great emphasis on meticulous vineyard management, organic viticulture and high-quality winemaking. Since 2015, the winery has been organically certified.
Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) is one of Austria’s highest quality categories, reserved for exceptionally concentrated sweet wines. This style is made from very ripe grapes, often affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which causes them to lose water on the vine and develop an exceptionally high concentration of sugars and aromatic compounds. Gesellmann’s 2017 TBA is made from the aromatic Sämling 88 (Scheurebe) grape variety. The 2017 vintage was exceptional: after the main harvest, the winery waited until December, and the small yet highly promising Trockenbeerenauslese crop was harvested on 22 December.
Tasting Notes:
The wine displays a rich amber colour. The nose reveals intense aromas of tropical fruit, honey, lychee, candied apricots and orange peel, complemented by subtle notes of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea).
On the palate, highly concentrated tropical fruit, honey and hints of caramel are balanced by vibrant acidity and the subtle spice of noble rot. Despite its immense concentration and sweetness, the wine remains lively and harmonious. Its long, creamy finish adds exceptional complexity. The producer describes this wine as an intense, age-worthy dessert wine that needs time for its sweetness to become fully integrated.
Serving:
Weingut Gesellmann Trockenbeerenauslese 2017 can be enjoyed now, but it possesses exceptional ageing potential. Thanks to its high concentration of sugar, acidity and aromatic compounds, it can evolve for many years, gradually developing greater complexity with notes of honey, dried fruit, caramel and noble rot.
We recommend serving it at 8–10°C in a small dessert wine glass. Decanting is not necessary.
It pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, apricot and peach desserts, crème brûlée, foie gras and intensely flavoured blue cheeses. It is also a wine worth enjoying on its own, as an exceptional finale to a meal.
