Description
Barnaut Clos de Bouzy Barnaut Grand Cru 2019 – one of Champagne Barnaut’s most remarkable wines, beautifully expressing the distinctive character of the Bouzy Grand Cru village.
Champagne Barnaut is one of the oldest family-owned Champagne houses in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy. Its history dating back to the 19th century. Since 1899, the Barnaut family has owned Clos de Bouzy, a historic 0.3781-hectare walled vineyard located in the heart of the village. For more than a century, the vines from this vineyard was reserved for the House’s prestigious blends. However, in 2019, owners made the historic decision to vinify it separately for the very first time, allowing this unique terroir to express its own identity.
This Champagne represents the purest expression of its origin. One village (Bouzy Grand Cru), one vineyard (Clos de Bouzy), one grape variety (100% Pinot Noir), and one vintage (2019). Fewer than 2,000 bottles were produced from this inaugural release, making it not only an outstanding gastronomic Champagne but also a true collector’s wine.
The vineyard is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir vines averaging 55 years of age, growing on a gentle north-facing slope protected by historic stone walls. This unique microclimate allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving freshness, structure, and remarkable minerality.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with only perfectly ripe bunches selected. As the vineyard lies adjacent to the Barnaut press house, the fruit is pressed just minutes after harvest. Following four hours of must clarification, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 18°C. The wine is aged on its fine lees for 11 months before spending more than six years ageing in bottle. A restrained Extra Brut dosage (3 g/L) allows the pure character of Pinot Noir to shine without masking the vineyard’s terroir.
Aroma & Taste
The nose is precise and multi-layered, revealing aromas of ripe white peaches, nectarines, orchard fruits and citrus. With time in the glass, delicate notes of buttery brioche, fine pastries, chalk, wet stone and lightly toasted hazelnuts emerge, adding remarkable complexity.
On the palate, the Champagne is elegant, concentrated and exceptionally precise. Its fine, persistent bubbles create a creamy texture, beautifully balanced by vibrant chalky acidity. The long finish reveals layers of citrus zest, white fruits, subtle spice and the pure fruit expression of Pinot Noir. While already captivating in its harmony today, this Champagne will continue to gain complexity and depth over the coming decades.
Serving
Serve at 11–12°C in a large white wine glass or tulip-shaped Champagne glass. Allow the wine to breathe for a few minutes before serving to fully reveal its aromatic complexity.
It pairs beautifully with SOMM Beef Tartare, oysters, Stone Sea Bass ceviche, Sea Bass fillet, or a selection of fine cheeses. For dessert, we recommend pairing it with “Nocciola Toscana” or Yuzu & Apple Ice Cream.
