Description
Barnaut Authentique Bouzy Grand Cru Rosé – an expressive Bouzy Grand Cru Rosé made using the saignée method, revealing the vibrant fruit character and elegance of Pinot Noir.
Champagne Barnaut is one of the oldest family-owned Champagne houses in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, with a history dating back to 1874, when Edmond Barnaut was among the first producers in the region to make and market Champagne under his own name. Today, Philippe and Guillaume Secondé continue the traditions of the fifth and sixth generations of the family, with a strong focus on Bouzy terroir, old vines and sustainable viticulture.
Authentique Rosé is the only rosé Champagne produced by the Barnaut House and one of its most expressive gastronomic wines. This Champagne is made using the traditional saignée method, whereby colour and much of the wine’s character are extracted by drawing off juice from the Pinot Noir grapes shortly after crushing. This technique gives the Champagne its intense colour, generous fruit character and distinctive vinous personality.
The wine is made from 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay, sourced from the Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy. Pinot Noir grapes undergo a cold maceration for 1–3 days before pressing, allowing the wine to develop its intense colour and concentrated fruit character. The grapes are hand-harvested, and fermentation takes place at a controlled 18°C in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is aged on its fine lees and undergoes malolactic fermentation. Vibrant Chardonnay is blended into the Pinot Noir base, bringing additional freshness and acidity.
The wine is aged in the cellars for approximately five years. The Champagne has a dosage of 6 g/L, allowing it to retain its generous fruit character and richness while maintaining freshness and balance.
Aroma & Taste
The nose is intense and fruit-driven, dominated by aromas of fresh and candied red fruits – redcurrants, raspberries, strawberries and cherries. These are complemented by notes of orange, grapefruit, dried rose petals, mint and subtle spices.
On the palate, the Champagne is rich, rounded and structured while retaining vibrant freshness. Pinot Noir gives the wine depth and a gentle tannic grip reminiscent of a light red wine. The fine bubbles create a creamy texture. Flavours of red fruits, orange and delicate spices lead into a long, mineral and subtly saline finish.
Serving
We recommend serving at 12°C in a large white wine glass or tulip-shaped Champagne glass. A wider glass allows the wine’s fruit character and vinous complexity to fully express themselves.
It pairs beautifully with SOMM Beef Tartare, oysters, Vitello Tonnato and prawns pan, as well as spicier dishes where the fruit and freshness of the Rosé can balance the intensity of the seasoning. It is particularly well suited to a selection of aged, full-flavoured cheeses. The producer recommends enjoying this Champagne either throughout an entire meal, either as an aperitive.
