Description
Château Kirwan Margaux 2014 – an elegant and refined Margaux classic.
Château Kirwan is one of fourteen Margaux estates classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It is located in the commune of Cantenac, in the Médoc region of France. It takes its name from Mark Kirwan, an Irish merchant from Galway, who in 1760 married the daughter of the then owner, Sir John Collingwood. He renamed the estate after himself and built the present château. Thomas Jefferson wrote about the wine as early as 1787. Since 1926 Château Kirwan has belonged to the Schÿler family, whose roots in the Bordeaux wine trade go back to the 18th century. Today it is run by the siblings Yann, Sophie and Nathalie Schÿler. The estate’s roughly 37 hectares of vineyards grow in deep gravel on the Cantenac plateau with an unusually high proportion of clay, which gives the wine both elegant structure and juiciness.
The wine is made from the grapes of the finest plots. The harvest is picked by hand and each plot is vinified separately. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for around 18 months in oak barrels, part of which are renewed each year. The 2014 Bordeaux harvest was saved by a warm, sunny early autumn. As a result the grapes ripened slowly, and the wines are marked by freshness and finesse.
Taste:
The wine is a deep ruby colour. The nose shows black and red berries – cherry, blackcurrant, blueberry – complemented by hints of violets, spice, pink peppercorn and vanilla.
On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with a silky texture, fine tannins and well-balanced acidity. The long finish carries ripe cherry and subtle roasted notes.
Serving:
Château Kirwan Margaux 2014 is drinking beautifully now, yet thanks to its structure it can continue to develop for a further 8–10 years.
We recommend decanting for about 1 hour before serving and pouring into a generous red wine glass at 16–18°C.
It pairs beautifully with beef steaks, game, roast lamb and aged cheeses.
