Description
Fattoria Pagano Gaurasi Falerno DOP – fruit forward, ripe and well-balanced wine.
Falerno is an extremely rare appelation that received DOC status only recently: only in 1989, though the wine was famous for its quality even in Roman times. This was largely due to the geographical location of this appeal.
Falerno DOC is located in the hilly province of Caserta in western Italy. Grapes grown in the provinces of Sessa Aufrunca, Cellole, Mondragone, Falciano del Massico and Carinola are famous for their rich character and intense taste. This is partly due to the volcanic soil, which absorbs moisture extremely well and is very abundant in its topsoil. Although these vineyards are very close to the sea, they are high enough not to create excess moisture. This means that the grapes ripen extremely well, they have a lot of sun. They also retain a good amount of acid because the winds blowing from the sea revitalize the vineyards and the same wind removes any possible mold or fungus. Due to this geographical location, winemakers pick high-quality and healthy grapes.
Legend has it that the wine god Bacchus incarnated in human form and appeared to an old farmer named Falernus who lived on the slopes of Mount Massico. God Bacchus was specifically embodied in the body of a poor, destitute person, but the farmer ignored it and fed and gave him everything he had himself: milk, honey, and fruit. Legend has it that, surprised by such generosity, Bacchus Massico has turned the slopes into huge vineyards, and for a long time the quality of the wine produced here could not be matched.
If you don’t want to believe in legends, written sources say that the Roman emperors and the great soldiers of the Roman Empire set out on the biggest marches.
Winemaking process:
Fattoria Pagano Gaurasi Falerno DOP is made from grapes grown on the southern slopes. Therefore, the grapes harvested are well ripened and the juice is concentrated. Due to the poor soil, the grapes have a low yield. And because of the steep slopes, the grapes are picked by hand, in small boxes containing 15 kg of berries. After fermentation, the wine is kept in stainless steel barrels for at least another 18 months to keep it fresh, fruity and reach its peak sooner.
Tasting profile:
Fattoria Pagano Gaurasi Falerno DOP is a complex, weighty and well-ripened wine. Due to the constant sun, the aromas of ripe dark berries, blueberries and blackberries dominate the wine. The taste of the wine is heavy, rich and weighty with tannins. The wine retains a good amount of acid, thus is well-balanced. Its aftertaste is long, fruity and mouthwatering.
