Description
Fattoria Pagano Taurasi Riserva DOCG 2019 – a powerful and long-lived classic from Southern Italy.
Fattoria Pagano is a family-run organic winery based in Campania, southern Italy. The winery was founded by a father-and-son duo, Antonio and Angelo Pagano, driven by a love of the land and a desire to revive the winemaking traditions of ancient Rome. Today the winery manages vineyards in two distinct areas of Campania. These are located in Carinola, in the province of Caserta, where it produces Falerno del Massico wines, and in Altavilla Irpina, in the province of Avellino, where its highest-quality Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino wines are crafted. Since 2019 the winery has held organic certification, uses only minimal sulphites and recycles grape pomace as a natural fertiliser. Producer uses oak sparingly, only where it lends a distinctive character to the wine.
Taurasi is one of Italy’s most prestigious appellations, often referred to as the “Barolo of the South”. It is situated in the hills of the province of Avellino in Campania. The vineyards lie at 400–500 metres above sea level on volcanic soils, which give the Aglianico grape its exceptional character. This wine is made from 100% Aglianico grapes grown in the Altavilla Irpina vineyards. Because of DOCG Riserva regulations, the wine is aged for a minimum of 4 years, of which at least 18 months are spent in oak barrels.
Taste:
The wine reveals a rich composition of dark cherry, plum and chocolate aromas. It is complemented by elegant hints of spice, tobacco, leather and balsamic notes.
On the palate, a full body dominates, with abundant yet beautifully integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity. Together they create a multi-layered, long and warm finish with earthy mineral undertones.
Serving:
Fattoria Pagano Taurasi Riserva DOCG 2019 is ready to enjoy now, yet thanks to its structure it has the potential to develop for a further 15–20 years.
We recommend decanting for at least 1–2 hours before serving and pouring into a generous Burgundy-style glass at 16–18°C.
It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, braised beef cheek, game dishes and aged cheeses.
