Description
Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2023 – an elegant and mineral-driven white wine.
Penfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary in South Australia. Over more than 180 years, it has become one of the world’s most renowned and respected wineries, with its wines serving as true ambassadors of Australian winemaking. Penfolds follows a simple yet uncompromising philosophy: wines are crafted according to the quality of the fruit rather than a single vineyard or region “going where the best fruit grows.” Since 2017, the fruit for Bin 311 has been sourced from several cool-climate regions, including Tasmania, Tumbarumba, Henty, and the Adelaide Hills. First released in 2005, Bin 311 is often referred to as the “little Yattarna,” as it draws on the same premium-quality vineyards that originally supplied fruit for Penfolds’ flagship Yattarna Chardonnay.
This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by eight months of maturation in French oak, of which 21% is new oak. The 2023 vintage reflects the diverse and contrasting growing conditions across Australia’s leading cool-climate wine regions, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity, balance, and finesse.
Aroma & Taste
The nose is refined and expressive, revealing delicate mineral floral notes, beeswax, pistachio nougat, and honeysuckle blossom, complemented by vibrant aromas of preserved lemon and fresh lemon zest.
On the palate, preserved lemon takes centre stage alongside juicy nectarine and grapefruit flavours. Creamy notes of white macadamia nuts and almond meal add texture and depth, while vibrant acidity carries through to a long, focused, and elegant finish.
Serving
Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2023 is ready to enjoy now but has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over the next several years.
For the best experience, serve well chilled at 10–12°C in a generously sized white wine glass.
It pairs beautifully with fresh seafood, creamy pasta dishes, roast chicken, and Asian-inspired cuisine.
