Description
Weingut Gesellmann “G” 2022 – an expressive, powerful and exceptionally complex Austrian red wine.
Weingut Gesellmann is a family-owned winery located in the town of Deutschkreutz, in the Mittelburgenland region of Austria. The family has been cultivating vines here since 1719, but it became more widely recognised in the 1970s under the leadership of Engelbert Gesellmann. He was among the first in Austria to experiment with barrique ageing and international grape varieties. Since 1992, the winery has been led by his son, Albert Gesellmann, who has placed an even stronger focus on the production of high-quality red wines and on revealing the potential of local grape varieties. Since 2015, the winery has been organically certified. Today, the Gesellmann estate manages approximately 50 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are planted with red grape varieties.
“G” is a distinctive Gesellmann wine created as a tribute to the traditions of the region and its old vines. It is made from small-berried Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grapes sourced from the oldest vineyard parcels. This combination brings together the structure, spiciness and freshness of Blaufränkisch with the fruit character and supple texture of St. Laurent.
The wine is produced organically and undergoes spontaneous fermentation. Furthermore, distinctive character is shaped by an impressive 40 months of ageing in new barrique barrels. This extended maturation adds depth and complexity while allowing the fruit, tannins and oak to gradually integrate. The 2022 vintage was characterised by a warm and dry growing season, while sunny and warm conditions during harvest allowed the grapes to reach a high level of phenolic ripeness.
Tasting Notes:
The wine displays a very deep, dark ruby-garnet colour with pronounced violet reflections.
The nose is intense, deep and multilayered, revealing concentrated forest berry fruit, ripe black cherries, blueberries and plums, complemented by subtle notes of forest floor, tobacco, dried herbs and liquorice. In the background, nuances of chocolate, vanilla, sandalwood and delicate coconut emerge, reflecting the wine’s extended ageing in new oak barrels.
On the palate, the wine is powerful, rich and highly complex, while maintaining an elegant structure. Ripe black cherries, plums and dark berries are complemented by refreshing acidity, providing energy and balance. The tannins are exceptionally fine, silky and fully integrated, while subtle spice adds further depth. The finish is long, mineral and slightly saline, lingering on the palate with notes of dark fruit, spices and sandalwood.
In 2026, Falstaff awarded the wine 98 points, highlighting its powerful and rich character, notes of blueberries, forest berries, tobacco, herbs and chocolate, refreshing acidity, silky tannins, mineral finish and excellent ageing potential.
Serving:
Weingut Gesellmann “G” 2022 is a high-end wine that already displays impressive complexity, while its concentration, acidity, tannic structure and extended maturation give it excellent potential for further development in bottle.
We recommend serving it at 16–18°C in a large Bordeaux glass or another spacious red wine glass. When young, the wine benefits from approximately 1–2 hours of decanting, allowing its aromatic complexity to unfold and its fruit, spice and mineral nuances to emerge.
It pairs exceptionally well with SOMM dry-aged beef, steak, Lamb steak and intensely flavoured aged hard cheeses. The wine’s structure and tannins are particularly well suited to rich, protein-rich dishes, while its refreshing acidity helps maintain balance.
