Description
Weingut Gesellmann Opus Eximium No˚35 2023 – a rich and complex Austrian red wine masterpiece.
Weingut Gesellmann is a family-owned winery located in the town of Deutschkreutz, in the Mittelburgenland region of Austria, where the family has been growing grapes since 1719. The winery became more widely known in the 1970s under the leadership of Engelbert Gesellmann. Latter, one of the great pioneers of red winemaking in Burgenland. In 1979, he was among the first in Austria to age wines in small barrique barrels, using used barrels from Château Latour. In 1988, Gesellmann created the winery’s flagship cuvée, Opus Eximium (“exceptional work”), which quickly gained recognition both domestically and internationally. From 1992, the winery was taken over by his son, Albert Gesellmann, who fundamentally reworked the cuvée’s composition. From 1999, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir were replaced by indigenous Austrian varieties – Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and St. Laurent. Since 2015, the winery has been certified organic and is considered one of the leading red wine producers in Burgenland.
Opus Eximium No˚35 marks the 35th release of this iconic cuvée. The 2023 vintage was characterized by a dry and hot summer, producing exceptionally vibrant, ripe and concentrated fruit. The wine is made from 60% Blaufränkisch, 30% Zweigelt and 10% St. Laurent. It is sourced from vines between 30 and 70 years old. Each variety is fermented separately, after which the wine is aged for 24 months in used small oak barrels. Afterwards, wine ageing for an additional 3 months in large oak vessels before release.
Tasting Notes:
The wine displays a rich, deep ruby colour with purple reflections. The nose is alluring and inviting, revealing black forest berries, sweet cherries, blackcurrants and blueberries, complemented by subtle notes of nougat, vanilla and orange peel.
On the palate, it is juicy and complex, with ripe cherries and fresh forest berries, delicate tannins, a mineral and slightly saline finish, and an elegant, lingering aftertaste.
Serving:
Weingut Gesellmann Opus Eximium No˚35 2023 is already enjoyable to drink now, but thanks to its structure, it can continue to develop for another 10–15 years.
We recommend serving it at 16–18°C in a spacious red wine glass and decanting for at least 1 hour before serving.
It pairs particularly well with beef and lamb steaks, slow-cooked meat dishes and aged cheeses.
