Description
Weingut Gesellmann Pinot Noir Ried Siglos 2023 – an elegant, refined and mineral-driven Austrian Pinot Noir.
Weingut Gesellmann is a family-owned winery located in the town of Deutschkreutz, in Austria’s Mittelburgenland region. The family has been cultivating vines here since 1719, but it became more widely recognised in the 1970s under the leadership of Engelbert Gesellmann, one of the pioneers of Austria’s red wine revolution. He was among the first in Austria to experiment with barrique ageing and international grape varieties, creating the iconic “Opus Eximium” and “Bela Rex” wines. In 1992, the winery was taken over by his son Albert Gesellmann, who further focused on producing high-quality red wines. Since 2015, the estate has been organically certified. Today, Gesellmann owns around 50 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are planted with red grape varieties.
“Ried Siglos” is one of the Gesellmann vineyards particularly well suited to Pinot Noir. Its northern exposure and chalky, highly mineral-rich soils create a cooler microclimate: temperatures drop more significantly at night, allowing the grapes to retain their aromatic delicacy, freshness and elegant acidity. Consistent winds help the vines dry quickly after rainfall, making the site particularly favourable for the sensitive Pinot Noir grape.
This wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir, also known as Blauburgunder in Austria. The 2023 vintage was characterised by variable weather conditions and relatively high rainfall. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and is aged for 20 months in small wooden barrels, while the oak remains subtle and does not overshadow the fruit character of the Pinot Noir or the mineral expression of the site.
Tasting Notes:
The wine displays a clear, medium-intensity cherry-red colour with garnet hues.
The nose is elegant and layered, revealing ripe red berries, fresh cherries, cranberries, wild berries, and subtle floral and orange peel notes. The background shows delicate hints of spice, cool herbs, minerals and very subtle oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with vibrant, refreshing acidity and exceptionally silky, fine-grained tannins. Juicy cherries, red berries and cranberries dominate, while the mineral character adds further energy and precision. The oak is seamlessly integrated and never overpowering, allowing the varietal character of Pinot Noir to remain clearly expressed. The finish is long, fresh, mineral-driven and slightly saline, with lingering notes of ripe red fruit.
Serving:
Weingut Gesellmann Pinot Noir Ried Siglos 2023 is already enjoyable to drink, while its structure, acidity and subtle maturation give it good potential for further development.
We recommend serving it at 14–16°C in a spacious Pinot Noir / Burgundy red wine glass. A brief period of aeration can be beneficial before serving, although extensive decanting is not necessary for this young wine.
It pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, duck confit, veal, roast chicken, pork loin, SOMM Portobelo pan, truffles and milder aged cheeses. Its refreshing acidity and delicate tannins make it particularly well suited to dishes where aromatic complexity is more important than richness or weight.
